Eight miners are in an underground safe room following a fire in a northern Manitoba nickel mine.
Murray Nychyporuk (NITCH-uh-POUR-uck) with the United Steelworkers union says a piece of equipment caught fire Sunday afternoon inside the Vale (VAH'-lay) Inco facility near Thompson.
The fire broke out about 850 metres below the surface.
Smoke and a stench gas forced a few dozen workers into shelters, but no one was injured.
Some miners had managed to return to the surface by this morning.
He says the fire is out but is still smouldering, and crews are hoping to get the rest of the miners out today.
