Metro Vancouver's Transportation Plebiscite Results On Thursday: Elections BC

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 30 Jun, 2015 11:38 AM
VANCOUVER — The results of Metro Vancouver's transportation plebiscite will be released later this week.

British Columbia's chief electoral officer Keith Archer will make the announcement on Thursday morning.

Residents of Metro Vancouver were asked to vote on whether they supported a half-per-cent sales tax for $7.5 billion in upgrades to transportation infrastructure in the region.

The tax increase would fund more buses, roads, light rapid transit and a new bridge.

Proponents have tried to woo voters by saying the improvements are necessary to accommodate a growing population, which they say will only worsen traffic congestion.

The No side has criticized the proposal as a tax grab, saying the transit authority, Translink, can't be trusted with more money.
