WINNIPEG — A Metis teen who lost her cousin to suicide has raised more than $10,000 for the volunteer group that helped find his body.
Kayleen McKay started running 420 kilometres from Duck Bay, Man., 10 days ago to finish in Winnipeg Tuesday.
The 18-year-old says she decided to run the equivalent of a marathon a day after her cousin committed suicide and his body was found by members of Drag The Red — volunteers who dredge up the Red River searching for clues about missing and murdered loved ones.
McKay finished her journey steps away from the river where her cousin's body was found and says she was overwhelmed by the support she's received.
Kimberley Kostiuk, with Drag The Red, says the money Kayleen raised will help buy the group a much-needed boat.
She says she hopes it will allow the group to bring closure to other families.
