Medical Examiner Tells Calgary Woman's Trial Boy Tied Of 'Overwhelming Sepsis'

The Canadian Press, 29 Nov, 2016 12:58 PM
CALGARY — The trial of a Calgary woman has heard that her seven-year-old son, whom she treated with dandelion tea and oil of oregano, died from "overwhelming sepsis."

Tamara Lovett, who is 47, is charged with failing to provide the necessaries of life and with criminal negligence causing the boy's death.

Ryan Alexander Lovett died in March 2013 after getting a strep infection that kept him bedridden for 10 days.

Alberta's acting chief medical examiner told court an autopsy found the boy's body full of Group A streptococcus, which had caused most of his major organs to deteriorate.

Dr. Elizabeth Brooks-Lim said there were indications that his body had tried to rid itself of the infection, but his immune system was too exhausted.

Brooks-Lim testified that despite the infection, Ryan's body appeared normal and there were no signs of any abuse.
