The Mayor of Surrey, Doug McCallum, has declared the month of November as 1984 Sikh Genocide Remembrance Month. The proclamation has been made by the city to reaffirm its commitment to the values of justice, equality, freedom, and human rights.

The city recognizes that organized and systemic violence was carried out against the Sikh population throughout India in November 1984. Such a heinous actions against the Sikhs were a clear violation of human rights according to the United Nations. The city of Surrey deems it is important to acknowledge such history in order to declare such acts as unacceptable.
