Mark Carney to lead Liberal economic task force ahead of next election

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 09 Sep, 2024 12:18 PM
  • Mark Carney to lead Liberal economic task force ahead of next election

Former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney will chair a Liberal task force on economic growth.

The appointment was announced as Liberal MPs gathered in Nanaimo, B.C. today to plot their strategy for the coming election year.

Long touted as a possible leadership successor to Trudeau, Carney was already scheduled to address caucus as part of the retreat this week.

The Liberals say he will now help shape the Liberal platform for the next election, and will report to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Liberal party platform committee.

Trudeau said several weeks ago that he has long tried to coax Carney to join his government.

His decision to jump in as an adviser comes at a difficult time for the Liberals, who have floundered in the polls for more than a year.

Lunn, who said attention was now turning to recovery, called the losses "heartbreaking," although she couldn't see the damaged buildings from the newly reopened section of highway.

Why it took nearly a year to link multiple Listeria cases to some plant-based milks
The Public Health Agency of Canada says it was only after multiple Listeria cases emerged in Ontario in June that it recognized a broader outbreak that had started back in August 2023. Questions have swirled around why it took nearly a year for the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to announce a national recall of several Silk and Great Value plant-based milk products on July 8.
