Manitoba Liberals Rana Bokhari Promise Pilot Project On Minimum Income If Elected

The Canadian Press, 15 Jan, 2016 01:02 PM
WINNIPEG — Manitoba Liberals are promising an updated look at a guaranteed minimum income if they win the April 19 election.

Liberal Leader Rana Bokhari says she would set up a pilot project in which poor people would be assured a certain amount of money each year to improve their circumstances.

Bokhari says she would run the experiment in two communities to be decided later.

Research from a similar project in Dauphin in the 1970s found an assured income reduced the number of hospital visits and improved the overall health of residents.

The experiment cost $17 million for a community of 10,000, and the federal government paid three-quarters of the cost.

The Liberals have one seat in the legislature.
