Manitoba Judge Resigns Following Impaired Driving Arrest

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 19 Mar, 2016 02:11 PM
WINNIPEG — A Manitoba judge facing an impaired driving charge has resigned.

Provincial court Judge Michel Chartier was arrested by Carberry RCMP last weekend.

He was charged with having a blood alcohol level over .08.

Chartier was released after promising to appear in a Brandon courtroom later this month.

He was also placed on leave from his job.

Chief Judge Ken Champagne says in a statement that respect of the judiciary is essential to an effective justice system.

"Therefore, while the resignation of Michel Chartier from the court is regrettable, by having resigned today, he has done the honourable thing, recognizing that the charges brought against him would significantly undermine public confidence in the judiciary."
