Man Shot By Police After Vancouver's Downtown Stabbing Spree From Edmonton: Coroner

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 14 Apr, 2015 11:03 AM
VANCOUVER — An Edmonton resident has been identified as the man shot and killed by a police officer after he stabbed three people outside a church on Vancouver's Downtown Eastside.

The BC Coroners Service has identified 26-year-old Abdi Hirsi as the man who was killed last Thursday during a confrontation with an officer.

Police said they received a call about a man stabbing people and arrived to find the suspect wielding a knife outside of First United Church.

A police statement said officers unsuccessfully tried to arrest the man and fired multiple bean bag rounds in an attempt to control him, then shot him when he started to stab a woman.

Three people were hurt, including the woman who was taken to hospital in critical condition, while two men were treated for non life-threatening injuries.

Detectives from the major crime unit and the Independent Investigations Office are both investigating.
