Man in hospital with serious injuries, IIO called in

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 26 Jun, 2023 02:19 PM
  • Man in hospital with serious injuries, IIO called in

A man is in hospital with serious injuries and B-C's independent police watchdog -- the Independent Investigations Office -- has been called to the scene.

The I-I-O says police say they were called to a report of a potentially impaired driver on Highway 1 through West Vancouver at about three this morning and told investigators there was an exchange of gunfire as they arrived.

Another officer then used their police vehicle to try to stop the man -- and the I-I-O says the victim was "struck," although whether by the cruiser, by bullets -- or both -- is unclear.

Investigators want to speak to anyone who might have seen the arrest and say they are "working to confirm the sequence of events" this morning, including the actions of both the man and police.
