VANCOUVER — The B.C. Coroners Service has identified a man who was fatally shot during an encounter with Vancouver police.
The coroner says 51-year-old Phuong Na (Tony) Du was taken to Vancouver General Hospital after the incident on Saturday but died shortly after he arrived.
Police say they had received calls about the man and arrived to find him distraught, shouting and waving a plank of wood around.
Police say he refused to comply with orders, so they used bean bag rounds in attempt to subdue him and take him into custody.
But they say the attempts to disarm him didn't work, so they shot him.
The Independent Investigations Office and B.C. Coroners Service are both investigating.
