Man Charged In 2014 Death Of Indigenous Woman In Edmonton's West End

    Edmonton police have charged a man with killing a woman whose body was found in a storage shed two years ago.
     
    Freda Goodrunning, a 35-year-old mother of six from the Sunchild First Nation in west central Alberta, was discovered dead in Edmonton's west end on June 4, 2014.
     
    Police say she died of blunt force trauma.
     
    Jesse Daniel Martin, 33, is facing charges of second-degree murder and possession of a dangerous weapon.
     
    He appeared briefly in court Friday and was remanded in custody.
     
    Raquel Goodrunning says Martin had dated her sister and, although the police investigation took a long time, she's glad there's been an arrest.
     
    "I hope he just pleads guilty," she said from her home on the reserve near Rocky Mountain House.
     
    She said her sister was born with fetal alcohol syndrome and struggled with alcohol addiction. She was homeless the past few years of her life and ended up sleeping in shelters and on city streets.
     
    The sisters talked over the phone about three weeks before Goodrunning's body was found.
     
    "She was giggling — she was always giggling and laughing," her sister said.
     
    "She just met the wrong boyfriend."
