Man accused of killing Indian student in Canada to stand trial

Toronto, May 31 (IANS) A man accused of killing an Indian student in 2022 in Canada's British Columbia province will stand trial on the charge of second-degree murder, a media report said.
Dante Ognibene-Hebbourn, 23, was apprehended under the Mental Health Act after the February 26, 2022, attack on 24-year-old Harmandeep Kaur at the University of British Columbia's Okanagan Campus.
A month later, he was charged with Kaur's murder and has been in custody ever since.
He is now expected to reappear in court on June 12 to fix a trial date, the Global News reported.
Kaur was a student and also worked as a security guard at The University of British Columbia's Okanagan campus when she was fatally attacked.
Kaur, who had come from India had been living in Canada for over five years and aspired to be a paramedic.
She had got her permanent residency card just weeks before her death, her family members said.
Hundreds of people had gathered at the university campus last year to honour Kaur and the school lowered its flags to half-mast in the days after her death.
Mandeep Singh Dosanjh last spoke with family members at approximately 11 a.m. on April 29th. He is believed to have been staying at a hotel along the 8600 block of Alexandra Road in Richmond that evening, but checked out in the early morning hours.
Environment Canada has issued an air quality advisory for Prince George and the surrounding area due to high concentrations of coarse particulate matter, or dust. It says dust levels tend to be highest around busy roads and industrial operations.
The Canada Border Services Agency says a man from the United States has been sentenced to 30 months in prison after pleading guilty to the possession of loaded, restricted and prohibited firearms without a license. Burnaby RCMP is advising the public that Metrotown station is shut down due to an ongoing police incident. Burnaby RCMP is looking into the matter alongside Transit Police and to have the situation resovled at the earliest.
IHIT has identified the victim of the Surrey Guildford shooting on Tuesday as 20 year old Jayden Prasad of Surrey. Mr. Prasad was known to police and initial information suggests that this was a targeted incident with ties to the BC Gang Conflict.
