Lockdown Lifted At Wilfrid Laurier University After Online Threat

The Canadian Press, 16 Oct, 2015 10:53 AM
WATERLOO, Ont. — A lockdown at Wilfrid Laurier University has been lifted but authorities say they are still seeking the person responsible for an online threat against the school.

The university's Waterloo, Ont., campus was closed early Friday morning and students and faculty were told to stay away.

Administrators say they were tipped off to the threat by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigations, which is working with local police and the RCMP in the investigation.

Police say the threat was made in an anonymous post on the online forum 4chan, and noted it used similar wording as a threat made before a school shooting in the U.S.

They say it appears whoever posted the threat was not in Waterloo.

A photo shared on Twitter showed a post urging people to stay away from Wilfrid Laurier's science hall.

The lockdown came during the fall term reading week, meaning fewer students, faculty and staff were on campus.

Students tweeted they were warned of the lockdown by text message shortly after 8 a.m.

"So thankful to be a part of an academic institution where safety is so important. Thanks WLU for the TEXT this morning re: lockdown," one wrote.

Another said it was "aggravating" not to have more information about the lockdown, while others expressed concern for their classmates and colleagues.
