Liberals propose changes to Temporary Foreign Worker Program

Darpan News Desk Darpan, 05 May, 2014 11:45 AM
  • Liberals propose changes to Temporary Foreign Worker Program

Liberals have come forward proposing changes to the much debated Temporary Foreign Worker Program.

MP John McCallum, the party's immigration critic, has laid five reforms to the program that include regular audits into employers that apply to bring in foreign workers.

McCallum stated that the program required immediate reforms after Minister Jason Kenney suspended its use by fast-food industry following reports that the program was being abused.

These reforms also lay focus on better monitoring of employers who apply to bring in foreigners.

A full review of the program by the auditor general has also been demanded by McCallum. The Liberals want the government to tighten the so-called Labour Marketing Opinion Process, adding LMO approval should be required prior to an employer hiring temporary foreign workers.

Further, McCallum also said that the number of temporary foreign workers in Canada has more than doubled between 2005 and 2012.
