Letter To Justin Trudeau, Premiers: Scientists Tell Politicians To Rethink Pipelines

The Canadian Press, 01 Mar, 2016 12:26 PM
EDMONTON — Scientists are warning Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and premiers meeting in Vancouver this week that spending on infrastructure for fossil fuels may not be productive.

In an open letter to the politicians, members of Sustainable Canada Dialogues question pumping billions into new pipelines and other oil and gas projects.

They estimate it would cost $120 billion to build pipelines already approved as well as the oilsands projects it would take to fill them.

They suggest oil prices are unlikely to rise enough any time soon to justify that much spending.

The scientists say money would be better spent on renewable energy.

Sustainable Canada Dialogues is a group of 60 scientists from across the country and from a variety of disciplines from engineering to social sciences.

Trudeau and the premiers are meeting in Vancouver to start talks on a national climate-change strategy.
