OTTAWA - A left-leaning think tank is raising new questions about the possibility of political interference in audits of charities.
The Broadbent Institute says records suggest at least 10 right-leaning think tanks are reporting they don't carry out any political activites despite public statements which might suggest otherwise.
Yet, the institute says, those groups seem to be escaping the scrutiny of Canada Revenue Agency audits in to the political activity of charities even as left-leaning groups are being examined.
The analysis is being released later today and calls for an independent review of the process to ensure it's actually fair.
The CRA is currently conducting audits into whether registered charities are breaking a rule which prohibits them from spending more than 10 per cent of their money on political activities.
The agency says a charity's political leanings don't factor into making audit decisions.
