La Loche Will Need Years To Heal From High School Shooting: NDP MP

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 25 Feb, 2016 12:16 PM
OTTAWA — NDP MP Georgina Jolibois says it will take years for the community of La Loche to heal from the shootings last month that left four dead and seven others wounded.

Jolibois served as mayor of the northern Saskatchewan community for 12 years and wants Canadians to know the tragedy should be a national concern.

Students in La Loche will this week return to the school for the first time since the tragedy, which killed a teacher and a teacher's assistant. Two teenage brothers were also shot dead in a nearby home.

Jolibois says the Jan. 22 shooting, which occurred at the same school where she herself had been a student, could have happened anywhere in the country.

She says she was at home in La Loche when it happened and some of her family members were inside the school at the time.

Jolibois says she will be waiting to see if the Liberal government follows through on a commitment to a nation-to-nation relationship with Canada's Aboriginal Peoples.
