Kayaker dies after capsizing on river in central Alberta: RCMP

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 01 Oct, 2024 03:41 PM
  • Kayaker dies after capsizing on river in central Alberta: RCMP

An Alberta man is dead after his kayak capsized on the Athabasca River.

RCMP say they responded to a call on Saturday about a man in medical distress near the town of Hinton, Alta.

Police say the man's wife tried performing first aid, but the 49-year-old from Hinton was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mounties say the man was trying to recover an abandoned canoe at the time, adding that he was wearing a life-jacket.

They say unseasonably high water volumes on the river are believed to have been a key factor in the man's death.

Hinton is about 290 kilometres west of Edmonton.
