Kavie Toor Appointed UBC’s Managing Director Of Athletics And Recreation

Darpan News Desk, 13 Mar, 2020 01:08 AM

UBC Athletics and Recreation announced on Wednesday that Kavie Toor will take the helm as the Managing Director of Athletics and Recreation, effective April 6.

Toor has been part of the UBC family for over 20 years, beginning as a student who earned multiple degrees, including a Masters of Human Kinetics (Sports Management). After graduation, Toor quickly found employment on campus in a number of progressively responsible roles in the Department of Athletics and Recreation starting in 2001, most recently serving as the Senior Director, Recreation, Facilities and Sport Partnerships.

UBC said that as the Managing Director, Toor will play a pivotal role in continuing to advance UBC’s storied tradition of excellence in Thunderbirds varsity Athletics and Recreation. The department and the VP Students portfolio will continue to benefit from his energetic and inspirational leadership.

“I am a third generation UBC student and after three degrees and 20 years of employment I absolutely bleed blue and gold,” said Toor. “I care deeply about this place and am thrilled for the opportunity for this department to make an even larger impact in the UBC, regional, national and international community. I care deeply about keeping students and student athletes at the core of the work we do and this will be a focus of our work.”

“I am delighted to welcome Kavie into this pivotal role,” said UBC’s Vice President Students, Ainsley Carry. “The Managing Director of Athletics and Recreation is one of the most important roles in helping us deliver an unparalleled student experience while continuing to advance our tradition of excellence in Athletics and Recreation. Kavie has a proven track record of getting things done and he has my full support.”

In his previous role as the Senior Director, Recreation, Facilities and Sports Partnerships Toor demonstrated leadership and vision in overseeing multiple facilities and programs while initiating and leading over $200M in capital projects. Those projects include the completion of the UBC Aquatic Centre, UBC Thunderbird Park, and Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre among others. Toor also played a lead role in UBC’s hosting role in the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic games as well as leading on the UBC Olympic legacy strategy.

“I’m beyond excited to work with the amazing staff in the department to start shaping our future vision and priorities for the department,” said Toor.

All involved expect a seamless transition as Toor is already a familiar face and passionate supporter of varsity athletics and recreation events across the Point Grey campus.
