Injured Seal Pup Dies Weeks After Taken To Nova Scotia Wildlife Centre

The Canadian Press, 21 Mar, 2016 12:55 PM
SEAFORTH, N.S. — A grey seal pup that was hit by a vehicle on a Nova Scotia road has died while being treated for serious injuries at a wildlife rehabilitation centre.

Hope Swinimer, of Hope for Wildlife, says the little seal died of an infection nearly three weeks after it was brought to the facility outside Halifax.

The seal was found by an RCMP officer on a road in Pictou County on Feb. 10.

Swinimer says the seal arrived with an injured pelvis and additional tests found that a bone near the animal's collar bone was also broken, which complicated efforts to save him.

She says the seal, originally called Sammy, was renamed Valentine because he was brought to the centre so close to Valentine's Day.

Swinimer says the case demonstrates that not all of the animals brought to her centre can be saved, despite the best efforts of volunteers and veterinarians.
