Indigenous People Allege Discrimination, Racism In Winnipeg Taxi Industry

The Canadian Press, 04 Feb, 2016 12:06 PM
  • Indigenous People Allege Discrimination, Racism In Winnipeg Taxi Industry
WINNIPEG — Some indigenous people say Winnipeg's taxi industry is rife with racism and are calling for a boycott until their concerns are addressed.

Jackie Traverse says she and other indigenous women are treated like "garbage" — subject to sexual harassment and even assault.

Traverse has started up a volunteer ride-sharing page for indigenous women and says people should boycott the taxis until they treat people with respect.

Grand Chief Sheila North Wilson, who represents northern First Nations, says racism has become commonplace for indigenous people and is putting the safety of young women at risk.

Taxicab board chair David Sanders says the board has received a few formal complaints and acts quickly to investigate and address them when they come up.

Winnipeg has spent the past year try to address race relations after Maclean's magazine dubbed it the most racist in Canada.
