Indian Exchange Student Drowns In Kamloops River, RCMP Recover Body

Darpan News Desk, 06 May, 2019 06:43 PM

Kamloops RCMP say the body of a 23-year-old Indian exchange student has been recovered after the man was swept away in the North Thompson River on Friday morning.

Thompson Rivers University student along with friends went swimming in the North Thompson River near Chestnut Avenue.
Police said he was taking photos with friends when they fell in. The student was swept away and his friends were unable to reach him and bring him back to shore.

Kamloops Fire Rescue deployed their boat on the river immediately after notification.

"This appears to be nothing less than a truly tragic accident. The foreign student was out by the river taking pictures with friends when it appears he stepped a bit too far and fell off a steep embankment," said Staff Sergeant Mat Van Laer from the Kamloops RCMP.

“The public should always be extremely careful around moving water,” he added. “The shore line can shift from year to year and the river floor can drop rapidly in some places.”

    No criminal activity is suspected.
