IHIT identify Surrey man shot at home as 24 year old Gary Kang

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 07 Jan, 2021 06:33 AM
  • IHIT identify Surrey man shot at home as 24 year old Gary Kang

A man had died in the Morgan Heights neighbourhood of Surrey BC. Man known to police is no more after being shot at his home around 5am near 161St and 30 Ave.

The man has been identified as 24 year old Gary Kang of South Asian descent.

Kang, 24, was fatally shot this morning at his Surrey residence. Investigation is ongoing.

This investigation is being led by IHIT in partnership with the Surrey RCMP. This is Surrey's first homicide.

Recently two teenagers were killed in Surrey a 19 year old and a 14 year old. However there is no connection between the shootings of the teenagers and the latest homicide.

Investigators are appealing for witnesses, dashcam video or other surveillance tape in this investigation.

The statement says Kang was known to police, had a history of gang activity and his death is linked to ongoing conflict in Metro Vancouver.

Police believe more than one suspect was involved in the attack.

They say they are also exploring possible connections between the homicide and a burning vehicle found in Langley less than an hour after Kang was shot.

Homicide team Sgt. Frank Jang says anyone with information about the homicide or the vehicle fire is urged to speak with investigators.

“It is too early to offer a motive behind this ... shooting but given what we know of Kang’s history with gang activity, we will be engaging with our gang enforcement partners,” Jang says in the statement.
