Hundreds Stranded, Others Without Power As Slides Hit Northeast Of Pemberton

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 21 Sep, 2015 12:25 PM
  • Hundreds Stranded, Others Without Power As Slides Hit Northeast Of Pemberton
PEMBERTON, B.C. — Officials with the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District hope to gain a better idea today of how long it will take to repair roads and reach people stranded northeast of Pemberton, B.C.

Portage Road has been closed at Birken, about 30 kilometres northeast of Pemberton, and five properties have been ordered evacuated after heavy rains led to slides and flooding on Sunday.

The slides have  severed other roads between Birken and D'Arcy, at the west end of Anderson Lake, stranding travellers and cutting power to more than 250 BC Hydro customers.

Lights went out late Sunday morning and Hydro estimates electricity won't be restored until at least 5 p.m.

A debris flow and flooding has also led to an evacuation of several properties near Shalath, between the east end of Anderson Lake and the west end of Seton Lake, about 75 kilometres northeast of Pemberton.

No one has been hurt, but regional district officials say one unoccupied cabin has been destroyed by the slides near Birken.
