Homegrown Fashion Label Dsquared2 To Design Canada's Rio Opening Ceremony Outfit

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 11 Feb, 2016 11:31 AM
TORONTO — Canada's Olympic and Paralympic athletes will be getting the high-end designer treatment in Rio courtesy of homegrown label Dsquared2.

Official team outfitter Hudson's Bay Co. announced Thursday that the famed fashion brand helmed by Toronto-born twins Dean and Dan Caten will design Canada's opening ceremony outfit for the Summer Games.

"We are constantly inspired by Canada, so it is an honour to partner with Hudson's Bay in dressing Team Canada," the Catens said in a statement.

"The opening ceremony look is made with our passion for our birth country mixed with the energetic spirit of Dsquared2."

The Milan-based label was founded in 1995 by the Caten brothers, who were inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame in 2009.

The award-winning duo has past experience designing sportswear, having been enlisted by Italian soccer giant Juventus to create their official team uniforms.

DSquared2 has also outfitted its share of A-list stars, most recently Beyonce, who wore a custom creation by the label during her buzzed-about Super Bowl halftime performance.

The label faced a backlash last year over a fashion line that was being marketed with the name #dsquaw, a play on the brand's name which incorporated a term offensive to aboriginal women. The posts have since been deleted.

The Dsquared2-designed opening ceremony outfit and the full Team Canada collection is slated to be unveiled in April.
