Highway 1 shuts down in Chilliwack after fatal collision

Darpan News Desk BC Highway Patrol, 06 Aug, 2024 04:26 PM
  • Highway 1 shuts down in Chilliwack after fatal collision

UPDATE:

On Tuesday, at approximately 2:40 p.m., BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) and Chilliwack RCMP received multiple 911 calls related to a multiple vehicle fatal collision on Highway 1 eastbound near the Yale Road Exit.

Sadly, a local woman and child were declared deceased at the scene. A second child, from the same vehicle, was transported to hospital with serious injuries, but is expected to survive. There were no other serious injuries reported. The Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS) attended the scene and are working closely with BCHP investigators to identify all factors that led to this fatality.

The collision involved six vehicles and ten drivers and passengers.  The investigation is still in the early stages.

Initial information suggests that one or more vehicles stopped abruptly due to an obstruction in the roadway. At least one vehicle failed to stop in time and caused a chain reaction of collisions.

Impairment is not believed to be a factor. BC Highway Patrol is asking any witnesses or anyone with dashcam of the collision or events leading up to the collision to contact BC Highway Patrol at (604) 702-4039.

EARLIER STORY:

On Tuesday at approximately 2:45 pm, BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) and Chilliwack RCMP responded to a multi-vehicle incident on Highway 1 near Yale Road West in Chilliwack. The highway has been shut down eastbound and currently has a single lane open westbound.

Multiple first responders attended the scene to render aid to those involved. Police can confirm that there are fatalities and multiple people injured. The Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS) has been called out and will be attending to assist the investigation.

Police are asking the public to avoid the area until further notice and to check Drive BC for updates on the highway being re-opened.
