Help prevent brush fires: City of Surrey

Darpan News Desk, 12 May, 2016 10:20 AM

The early season high temperatures and dry weather have resulted in an increase in brush fire potential throughout the City Of Surrey. Since May 1st, the Surrey Fire Service has responded to 26 brush/grass fires. The majority of the roadside brush/bark-mulch fires in the City of Surrey are caused by carelessly discarded cigarettes and other smoking materials.

Open burning/backyard fires are not allowed in the City of Surrey. Anyone conducting open burning may be subjected to cost recovery for Fire Department attendance. Permit burning on Agricultural land is banned between May 1 and October 1.

Charcoal barbeques in City Parks and on City Beaches are prohibited. Propane barbeques and cooking appliance are allowed on City Property. The Surrey Fire Service and the City of Surrey wants everyone to have a safe spring and summer. By following a few simple rules you can enjoy the sunny weather and help prevent fires in our parks and beaches:

    •   Dispose of smoking materials properly

    •   Don’t leave barbeques or any cooking appliance unattended

    •   Properly dispose of bottles and broken glass

    •   Talk to your kids regarding the dangers of playing with fire
