Heavy Rainfall Soaks Saskatchewan, Prompts Local States Of Emergency

The Canadian Press, 12 Jul, 2016 12:34 PM
REGINA — Four Saskatchewan communities have declared emergencies because of flooding, as a rainfall warning continues from the southwest corner of the province to the northeast.

Deputy emergency management commissioner Mieka Cleary says residents of a trailer park in the southeast city of Estevan and in a long-term care home in the east-central town of Arborfield have been moved because of flooding.

Clearly says most evacuees are staying with family or friends, while the 36 care home residents were moved to other facilities.

She says the province has also sent out flood equipment — including sandbagging machines and pumps — to help stricken communities.

The weather system bringing all that rain to Saskatchewan is heading east towards Manitoba, where rainfall warnings have also been issued along the provincial boundary in places such as Flin Flon and The Pas.

The Manitoba government says it doesn't expect widespread floods, but warns localized, intense rainfall could create overland flooding in some areas.
