OTTAWA — The Harper government is taking a wait-and-see attitude on the foreign policy implications of the Israeli election.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's right-wing Likud Party has won re-election in Israel's national ballot.
In the final hours of the campaign, Netanyahu announced that he opposed Palestinian statehood and vowed to continue the construction of settlements.
Canada's foreign policy opposes those positions, although the Harper government has moved Canada closer to Israel than any previous Canadian government.
While Canada still supports a two-state solution and formally opposes the continued construction of Israeli settlements, the government has chosen to express that position privately to the Israelis.
The only government comment so far is a tweet from Foreign Affairs Minister Rob Nicholson congratulating Netanyahu and reaffirming Canada's friendship.
