Harold Backer, Missing B.C. Olympian Seen On Washington State Ferry Day He Disappeared: U.S. Police

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 10 Nov, 2015 01:41 PM
VICTORIA — Police in Washington are almost certain that a missing British Columbia man boarded a ferry entering the state from Victoria.

Deputy Chief Brian Smith of the Port Angeles Police Department says video surveillance shows a man matching Harold Backer's description on the Coho ferry last Tuesday.

That's the last day the 52-year-old former Canadian Olympic rower was seen, wearing a red cycling jersey and black riding pants and possibly riding a black road bike.

Smith says an officer who examined the footage from a camera on the waterfront is 85 per cent sure that Backer was on the vessel, based on the man's clothing and bicycle.

However, Smith says video surveillance from U.S. Customs and Border Protection does not show the man getting off the ferry in Port Angeles.

He said there could be various reasons for that, including that other people were in the way of the camera.
