Halifax university changes frosh week, a year after incident shone spotlight

Darpan News Desk Canadian Press, 27 Aug, 2014 10:47 AM
Saint Mary's University in Halifax is providing training to student leaders who are involved in orientation week activities, nearly a year since a frosh chant glorified non-consensual sex with underage girls.

The school's so-called Welcome Week leaders will go through two days of training and sign a charter that outlines the responsibilities that are expected of them.

The university has created the full-time position of orientation co-ordinator to oversee events and activities that are planned throughout the year.

A panel appointed by the school released an update today on its work to prevent sexual violence and encourage respectful behaviour.

The school is also developing online educational programs that deal with consent and the definition of sexual assault, as well as alcohol and drug use.
