Halifax Mother Who Lost Daughter To Depression Says More Youth Help Needed

The Canadian Press, 17 May, 2016 11:15 AM
  • Halifax Mother Who Lost Daughter To Depression Says More Youth Help Needed
HALIFAX — A Halifax-area mother whose 21-year-old daughter took her own life after struggling with depression says more has to be done to help youth in Nova Scotia who are dealing with mental illness.

Carolyn Fox says her experience with her daughter Cayley, who died Jan. 22, has shown her that there aren't enough treatment options and supports for young people in the health system.

Fox says because of privacy laws she didn't find out that her daughter was taken to the hospital on three occasions last year until her roommate called and told her.

She says Cayley was released each time within a few hours with no red flags from health professionals — a situation she says is unacceptable.

Fox appeared at the legislature today in support of legislation proposed by the Opposition Progressive Conservatives.

The Tory amendments to the Youth Secretariat Act would require the secretariat to establish a committee to focus on youth mental health issues and support systems.
