Gone with the wind: Alberta to sell government air fleet

Darpan News Desk Canadian Press, 16 Sep, 2014 11:30 AM

EDMONTON - Alberta Premier Jim Prentice says the province's controversial fleet of airplanes is up for sale.

Prentice says the first decision of his cabinet is to sell the four aircraft and use charter planes instead.

The fleet became a millstone around the neck of the Progressive Conservative government when it was revealed that former premier Alison Redford and other politicians used the planes for private and personal jaunts.

Prentice says his cabinet voted unanimously to sell off the fleet.

He also says there will be strict rules on who uses commercial flights, which may only be used for government business.

The move affects 27 union jobs, and Prentice says while he's not sure what will happen to these employees, they will be treated as "humanely" as possible.
