Fraudsters 'Spoof' Saskatoon Police Number To Get iTunes Gift Cards

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 04 Jul, 2016 12:59 PM
  • Fraudsters 'Spoof' Saskatoon Police Number To Get iTunes Gift Cards
Saskatoon police say they don't call people about paying taxes and definitely not by using iTune gift cards.

The force says it's getting reports from people who have been called by someone claiming to be with the Canada Revenue Agency and demanding payment for back taxes with iTunes gift cards.

When the residents refuse, they get a second call from what appears to be a Saskatoon police service number from an "officer" urging them to pay up.

Police say it appears fraudsters have "spoofed" the number: using software to mask where they are phoning from and making call display appear with a number from somewhere else.

It's the latest phone scam to have authorities warning people about fraud.

Last month, Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall said he was not telephoning people after a senior reported getting a call from someone claiming to be from Wall's office and looking for financial information.
