Mounties in Chilliwack say a four-year-old girl has drowned in a pond at a leisure centre.

Police say they received a report of the drowning at the water park of the Chilliwack Landing Leisure Centre Monday night. 

They say emergency responders, including officers, paramedics and firefighters all responded to the call.

Police say the girl had been pulled out of the water by family members and bystanders began CPR.

They say the child was brought to the hospital, where she died. 

Mounties are offering their "deepest condolences" to the girl's family and are thanking the bystanders and first responders who tried to save her life.

The British Columbia government is handing out $24 million to more communities that want to improve their walking and cycling infrastructure.
