Former prime minister Brian Mulroney dead at 84, says daughter

Former prime minister Brian Mulroney is dead at the age of 84, his daughter Caroline says in a social media post.

The country's 18th prime minister died peacefully and surrounded by family, she said in a post on X.

Brian Mulroney was Prime Minister through much of my childhood. Though our priorities are different, he conducted himself as a true statesman and represented our country with pride.

Mulroney's family said last summer he was improving daily after a heart procedure that followed treatment for prostate cancer in early 2023.

Mulroney died in a Florida hospital after a fall at his home in Palm Beach.

Mulroney, who headed the Progressive Conservative party, soared to the largest majority mandate in history when he was elected in 1984.

He entered the job with massive support, but he left with the lowest approval rating in the history of polling.

Mulroney lived in Montreal.

A state funeral will be held later this month for former prime minister Brian Mulroney.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says there will be opportunities for Canadians to express their condolences to Mulroney's family as well.

Mulroney's daughter, Caroline, said in a statement Thursday evening that her father died peacefully surrounded by his family.

Her spokesman later said Mulroney died in a Florida hospital after a fall at his home in Palm Beach.

The flag on the Peace Tower in Ottawa is flying at half-mast in his honour.

MPs agreed Friday morning to suspend Parliament for the day, and offer tributes to Mulroney on March 18.

Mulroney was the leader of the Progressive Conservative party in the 1980s and was prime minister for nearly nine years between 1984 and 1993.

Minimum-wage workers in British Columbia will get a pay hike of 65 cents an hour to $17.40 starting June 1, a move the government says will help lift more people out of poverty. The Ministry of Labour says in a statement the 3.9-per-cent increase is consistent with the province's average inflation rate last year.

The report makes more than two dozen recommendations, nine of them focused on raising family incomes through paying family-supporting wages or improving income supports. It says B.C.'s child poverty rate of 14.3 per cent was lower than the national average of 15.6 per cent, but the rate on 67 First Nations reserves is about double the national rate, while for single-parent families it's even higher at 40 per cent.

Upon arrival, officers located a 40 year female and a 35 year old male, both suffering from stab wounds. Both individuals were transported to a local area hospital where the female is listed in critical condition, while the male is currently stable.

A Delta man has now been charged with conspiracy to commit murder in relation to a 2023 Burnaby homicide. On September 16th of last year the Burnaby RCMP responded to a report of shots fired in the 3400-block of North Road, Burnaby. First responding officers arrived on scene and found a deceased man, later identified as 29-year old Gagandeep Sandhu of Abbotsford, in an underground parkade.
