Formal Review Into Death Of B.C. Man Shot By Police Still On Table: Official

The Canadian Press, 16 Feb, 2016 12:24 PM
BURNABY, B.C. — A high-ranking official responsible for policing and security in British Columbia says a provincial review into the death of a man shot by police outside a Lower Mainland casino isn't off the table.

Clayton Pecknold, assistant deputy minister in the Public Safety Ministry, told a coroner's inquest today that he would consider a formal review into the circumstances surrounding Mehrdad Bayrami's death depending on recommendations from the jury.

Pecknold says he didn't want to launch a parallel process while a coroner's inquest was ongoing.

Forty-eight-year-old Bayrami was killed following an hours-long armed standoff outside New Westminster's Starlight Casino in 2012.

Officers had responded to reports from casino employees about a man seen through live-security footage threatening a woman with a handgun.

The jury in a coroner's inquest does not assign blame but makes recommendations aimed at preventing similar events from recurring.
