Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly plans trip to Middle East, Mediterranean

Canada’s foreign affairs minister is embarking on a five-day trip to the Middle East and the Mediterranean where she will focus on peacekeeping and aid.

Global Affairs Canada says Mélanie Joly is set to leave today and will visit Cyprus, Lebanon, Turkiye and Greece where she will meet with her counterparts and other government officials.

This week, I’ll be travelling to Cyprus, Lebanon, Türkiye and Greece to discuss the rapidly evolving situations in the Middle East and in the Caucasus, and how 🇨🇦 can continue to provide critical support.

In a statement, Joly says rapidly evolving situations in the Middle East and Caucuses continue to have repercussions in Canada.

She says she looks forward to engaging with officials and to see how Canada can continue to provide support.

Details of her trip include marking the 60th anniversary of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus, and discussing how humanitarian aid can be increased into Gaza.

She will also discuss regional security and stability in the Middle East and South Caucasus.

B.C. River Forecast Centre issues flood warning for Sumas River, tributary of Fraser

British Columbia's River Forecast Centre has issued an upgraded flood warning for the Sumas River, a tributary of the Fraser River east of Vancouver, as the latest round of atmospheric rivers deluge the province's South Coast. An updated bulletin says flows in the Sumas River are not anticipated to pose a hazard for flooding into Sumas Prairie, an area hit hard by rainstorms and flooding that swamped much of southwestern B.C. in November 2021.

B.C. hops farm, director fined over $1M after alleged fraud: securities commission

A hops farm company and its director have been ordered to pay more than $1 million over an alleged fraud that a B.C. Securities Commission panel described as "near to the most serious type of fraud possible in an investment context." A statement from the commission says Fraser Valley Hop Farms Inc. and its sole named director, Alexander William Bridges, must pay a combined $498,273, representing the amount they obtained as a result of their alleged wrongdoing.
