First Month, Four Summits: Justin Trudeau Heading To Turkey, Philippines, Malta, Paris

IANS, 02 Nov, 2015 12:15 PM
WASHINGTON — Justin Trudeau will travel to four international summits within his first month in office.

The incoming prime minister is set to attend a G20 leaders' meeting in Turkey, an APEC summit in the Philippines, the Commonwealth leaders' gathering in Malta, and climate talks in Paris starting later this month.

He'd already announced plans to be at the climate summit — and today his office confirmed that he'll also attend the three earlier gatherings.

The schedule means that Trudeau will have a chance to meet national leaders before they gather again for the major climate negotiations.

U.S. officials delivering a briefing today in Washington on the APEC conference declined to speculate on whether he might meet privately with President Barack Obama.

They did, however, lay out some of the objectives for that gathering of Asia-Pacific leaders.

One goal is to nail down a commitment to eliminate tariffs on exported alternative-energy products like solar panels and wind turbines.
