Fire Destroys Community Hall In Northern Ontario First Nation

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 08 Apr, 2016 11:25 AM
FORT HOPE FIRST NATION, Ont. — The member of parliament for the riding that includes the Eabametoong First Nation in northern Ontario says a fire has destroyed the northern Ontario reserve's community hall.

Robert Nault says he is thankful no one was hurt in the blaze Thursday morning.

But he says the community, also known as Fort Hope, has lost a much-needed safe space for children and adults to socialize, play sports and share important cultural teachings.

Nault says fire officials are looking into the cause of the fire.

Last week, a house fire in Pikangikum First Nation claimed the lives of nine family members, including three children under five.

Police have said no foul play is suspected in that fire and the victims died of smoke inhalation.

A fundraiser has been launched to help Pikangikum meet its needs.
