Fire Crews Rescue Woman From Upside Down Car After BC Road Washed Out

The Canadian Press, 30 Jan, 2018 12:03 PM

NANAIMO, B.C. — A woman whose car was caught in a mudslide has been rescued by emergency officials on Vancouver Island.

Deputy Chief John Marment of Lantzville Fire Rescue says a road in the community was "completely washed away" and the woman was standing on an upside down car at the bottom of the slide when emergency crews arrived early Monday morning.

Marment says the woman was in mud and water almost up to her waist, and the car was sliding while crews set up rescue lines.

They managed to get the woman out and took her to hospital.

    Her condition was unknown.

Flooding has caused multiple road closures and forced the evacuation of an RV park in Parksville.

It has also flooded roads in Whiskey Creek, prompting the Regional District of Nanaimo to activate an emergency operations centre.

District spokesman Daniel Pierce says one road in Parksville had "quite a large gaping hole" in it and crews from the Transportation Ministry would be assessing the damage.
