  • Film producer Avi Lewis to seek NDP nod in B.C.

Documentary film producer Avi Lewis is seeking the federal NDP nomination in a riding in southern British Columbia.

Lewis, who lives on the Sunshine Coast, confirms in a social media post that he is pursuing the party's nomination in West Vancouver—Sunshine Coast—Sea to Sky Country.

He is the grandson of former federal NDP leader David Lewis and the son of former Ontario NDP leader Stephen Lewis.

The party's candidate for the next federal election will be selected at a virtual nomination meeting on Saturday and so far Lewis is the only person to have announced their candidacy.

The riding is held by Liberal MP Patrick Weiler.

The NDP finished fourth in the riding in the 2019 election.

Lewis is married to author Naomi Klein and they co-wrote the Leap Manifesto, the principles of which were adopted by the NDP in 2016. The manifesto advocates an end to the use of fossil fuels, including a moratorium on new infrastructure projects like pipelines.
