Female student told shorts inappropriate, distract classmates and teachers

Darpan News Desk Darpan, 13 May, 2014 02:12 PM

A 13-year-old female from Nova Scotia is facing detention after school administers said her jeans shorts were too short.

Makayla King who is now facing detention has launched an online petition with her mother Julia Davison asking the school, Truru Junior High School to re-evaluate its dress code.

"Her shorts are modest, they're normal length, they're not ripped, they're not torn, they're not too low on the waist. Nothing's showing that shouldn't be showing," Davison told media.

The petition that was launched Monday, has already garnered 5,200 signatures as of Tuesday afternoon.

Davison further said that the reason given behind this action by the school was that the shorts could distract boys and staff.

"It's being made to look like a lot of the male students and male teachers in the school have that problem, which is completely unfair to them, as well. They have a great group of male teachers. We've never had an issue with any of it," Davison said.

The following day on the entire episode, Makayla went school wearing a different pair of jeans shorts that were again deemed too short. If the teenager continues to wear these shorts she will face in-class suspension and then home suspension and as per news reports even suspension later on.
