OTTAWA — The federal New Democrats say a new record low in Arctic sea ice should spark an emergency debate in Parliament.

Environment critic Megan Leslie says she plans to file a request for the debate with Speaker Andrew Scheer first thing on Monday.

She says the House urgently needs to discuss the impacts of a melting Arctic.

Leslie says confirmation this week that the extent of this winter's sea ice is the lowest on record has implications for everything from defence to environment to the livelihoods of northerners.
