Father, Now A Woman, Gets 18-Month Sentence For Sexually Assaulting Daughter

The Canadian Press, 30 Oct, 2018 12:34 PM
QUEBEC — A Quebec City father who sexually assaulted his young daughter will be serving a sentence in a women's jail after undergoing a sex change between the time of the crime and the conviction.

The transgender woman, who cannot be named to protect the victim's identity, was sentenced to 18 months Monday for sexual assaults carried out when she was still a man.

The 33-year-old — the victim's biological father — had pleaded guilty to crimes that took place in 2013 when the girl was just three.

The accused was separated from the girl's mother at the time, and in the months following the assaults, he underwent a sex change.

The crimes came to light three years later, when the girl's mother was reading a sexual education book with her and the girl said she enjoyed oral sex.

The accused quickly admitted the crimes to police.

The Crown was seeking between 18 months and two years behind bars, while the defence had recommended 60 days to be served on weekends and community service for the woman, who had no previous criminal record.

In addition to the jail sentence and a probation period with mandatory therapy, Quebec court Judge Rene de la Sablonniere ordered that the accused be registered as a sex offender for 20 years.

Prosecutor Sonia Lapointe said she is satisfied as the sentence falls within the range she had sought in the case.
