Extinction Rebellion Protest: Demonstrators Block Vancouver’s Burrard Street Bridge

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 07 Oct, 2019 05:55 PM

VANCOUVER - A bridge linking Vancouver's downtown to the west side was closed Monday as environmental protesters joined similar demonstrations that were taking place around the world.

Traffic cameras showed several dozen demonstrators marching in the traffic lanes of the Burrard Street Bridge, one of three spans into the city's downtown core.

The city says about 55,000 vehicles a day use the four-lane bridge.

The demonstrators have said they are part of the global Extinction Rebellion protest.

The protesters said they will allow buses, emergency vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians to cross.

Extinction Rebellion protests were taking place in 60 cities around the globe, including Toronto, Halifax and Edmonton, with similar demonstration planned for Victoria and Montreal.
