Experienced Hiker Gordon Sagoo Missing Since Sunday In Chilliwack, Search On

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 17 Aug, 2016 10:58 AM
VANCOUVER — Members of several British Columbia search and rescue teams are scouring the rugged Cheam mountain range in the eastern Fraser Valley, hoping to spot any sign of a missing hiker.

The 50-year-old has not been seen since Sunday, when he hiked ahead of a group travelling to Baby Munday Peak, southeast of Bridal Falls.

The man's family has identified him as Gordon Sagoo.

Staff Sgt. Steve Vrolyk with Chilliwack RCMP said that although Sagoo is a very experienced trail runner and hiker, he did not have the equipment required to spend an extended amount of time in the mountains alone.

Vrolyk said the search will resume Wednesday morning. Search personnel with experience hiking in extreme terrain were also called in to assist.

Manpreet Gill, Sagoo's niece, told media he was carrying at least three litres of water with him at the time. She also said he was familiar with the terrain in the area.

    "He's a very well-prepared individual," said Gill.

"Within the hiking group, he's one of the leaders … he's one of the people who usually navigates and ensures everyone's safety during the hike."

A tweet from Chilliwack Search and Rescue confirms its members began searching Sunday night and are continuing their efforts.

A gofundme page posted by the family also thanks Port Coquitlam, Surrey and Lions Bay search and rescue team members for assisting.
