Members of the public attending council meetings and other public events at Vancouver City Hall will now go through an enhanced security screening process.
The city says in a statement that the change is responding to the evolving security environment and following in the footsteps of other Canadian cities that have adopted similar security measures.
However, the city released no further details on the nature of the potential security concerns.
It says city hall is remaining open and accessible to everyone and the new measures are aimed at creating a safe place.
India's move to reduce the presence of Canadian diplomats in its country are "contrary to international law," Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Friday, and the rest of the world should be concerned about its consequences. Police in New Westminster say a student at a city high school was arrested Wednesday after being found in possession of a knife. Police say an officer was at New Westminster Secondary on Wednesday morning for an unrelated reason, and told there was a student with a knife who was causing a disturbance.
The RCMP has told owners to turn in what the force is calling fully automatic military surplus firearms after hundreds were misidentified and allowed into Canada for commercial sale. The Mounties say the registrar of firearms immediately froze records relating to the 245 prohibited guns upon discovery of the issue to prevent further sale or transfer of the firearms.
The Independent Investigations Office is investigating a police-involved shooting in West Kelowna this afternoon where one man was injured. The R-C-M-P says police were responding to reports of gunshots and a man with a weapon in a vehicle.
Police are investigating after a pedestrian was struck and killed by a car in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside today. Police say two cars collided at an intersection just before 11 this morning, and one of the cars jumped the curb and he the person on the sidewalk.
