Elderly Man Gets 4-Month Sentence After Hit-And-Run Crash That Killed Teen Port Coquitlam Girl

The Canadian Press, 20 Jun, 2016 01:08 PM
PORT COQUITLAM, B.C. — A 75-year-old man has been sentenced to four months in jail for a hit-and-run crash that killed a teenage girl from Port Coquitlam, B.C.

Irwin Franz pleading guilty earlier this year to leaving the scene of the collision in September 2013.

A provincial court judge found there was no evidence that Franz was at fault for the accident that killed 16-year-old Annie Leung at a crosswalk, but ruled he should not have left the scene.

Franz has also been banned for driving for one year, though the Crown had asked for a two-year prohibition.

The judge noted at sentencing that Franz apologized to Leung's family and showed remorse.

Court heard Franz admitted himself to a psychiatric ward following the crash and has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety and depression.
